Is attributing causality actually possible in marketing?
Can you truly attribute causality in marketing? Not very effectively. Here's why the standard causal framework breaks down, and what to focus on instead.

Weather forecasters don't know the exact molecular reason a storm forms over the Gulf of Mexico. They understand pressure systems, temperature gradients, and historical patterns well enough to tell you to carry an umbrella tomorrow. They can't point to one single cause and say, "this is why it rained." But their model of the system is accurate enough to be genuinely useful.
Marketing measurement is facing a similar reality right now. The question of whether attributing causality is possible in marketing has become more urgent as brands pour more budget into channels with increasingly complex interactions, and the stakes of getting the answer wrong keep rising.

What "attributing causality" actually means
In a research or data science context, causality has a precise meaning. It's not just correlation or strong association. Attributing causality means being able to say that a specific action directly produced a specific outcome, and that without that action, the outcome wouldn't have occurred. It requires ruling out all other potential explanations.
Attribution theory in social psychology, developed in large part by researcher Bernard Weiner, has long been concerned with how people explain the causes of behaviors and outcomes. Weiner's work explored how we assign responsibility, whether to internal factors like effort and ability or external factors like environment and circumstance. What that research made clear is that even in relatively simple human behaviors, determining a definitive cause is harder than it looks.
In marketing, the complexity is an order of magnitude higher. You're not analyzing one person's behavior. You're trying to determine what combination of touchpoints, timing, and external factors drove outcomes across thousands or millions of customer journeys simultaneously.
Why marketing breaks the standard causal model
The most widely used framework for attributing causality in complex systems is the directed acyclic graph, or DAG. It maps how variables influence each other in a structured, one-directional flow. The "acyclic" part is the key distinction: effects can only move forward. A causes B, B causes C, but C can't loop back and affect A.
Marketing doesn't work this way.
Consider what happens when a brand runs a connected TV awareness campaign. That campaign drives branded search volume, which improves the performance of paid search ads, which brings in customers who leave reviews, which strengthens brand equity, which makes the next awareness campaign more efficient. The effect cycles back on the original cause. That's not acyclic. DAGs, as a framework, aren't structurally equipped to handle this kind of system, which means any measurement approach built on that assumption is working with an incomplete model from the start.
There are a few other reasons the standard causal inference toolkit struggles in marketing environments.
Channels aren't independent. Upper-funnel spend creates the conditions for lower-funnel campaigns to work. A retargeting ad that converts someone today may have only been possible because a YouTube campaign reached them three months ago. If you try to measure the retargeting campaign in isolation, you'll overstate its contribution. If you try to measure the YouTube campaign in isolation using a short-window incrementality test, you'll understate it.
Marketing effects take time, and they compound. The consistency of an effect matters as much as its size. A single campaign might influence someone's perceptions across weeks or months before a purchase actually happens. Time series data can capture some of this, but tools focused on short attribution windows will miss it almost entirely.
External factors create noise that looks like signal. A competitor runs a major awareness push, which drives up category search volume, which makes your branded campaigns look like they're performing better. Economic shifts, seasonal demand, and cultural moments all affect outcomes in ways that have nothing to do with your specific marketing decisions.
Why the tools that claim to solve this fall short
Incrementality tests like geo tests and holdout experiments are valuable, but they're built on the same acyclic assumption. They hold one variable constant (exposure to an ad) and compare outcomes. That works reasonably well for measuring a specific channel at a specific moment in time, but it doesn't tell you how that channel is interacting with everything else. A test can be locally accurate while producing insights that are globally misleading, because the real-world environment doesn't hold anything constant.
Multi-touch attribution takes a different approach and tries to divide credit across touchpoints in a customer's journey. The problem is that it treats those touchpoints as independent contributions rather than as parts of a system that influence each other. If a customer saw a Meta ad, then a YouTube ad, then searched your brand and converted, MTA assigns credit to each step. It doesn't account for the fact that the branded search might not have happened at all without the awareness campaigns that preceded it.
Neither approach is useless, but both assume a cleaner system than marketing actually is.
So what's the better goal?
If true causality (by its strictest definition) is out of reach, the useful shift is from "what caused this?" to "how does this system behave, and where can we improve it?" That's a different question, and it's one that's actually answerable.
