Spillover effects are the layer most attribution setups miss

Even brands that have done everything above are often working with a significantly incomplete picture of their marketing performance, because conventional attribution can't see what paid campaigns generate in channels they don't directly touch.

Those branded search conversions, though, almost universally get attributed to your SEM campaigns rather than to the awareness spend that created the demand.

This matters because it means your awareness campaigns look less effective than they are, and your branded search campaigns look more effective than they are. If you use that data to make budget decisions—scaling branded search and trimming awareness—you're essentially starving the machine that's generating the demand your branded search is capturing. Organic and direct traffic

The same dynamic plays out in organic and direct channels. Awareness campaigns drive people to research your brand. Some of them come back later through a direct URL visit; others search a non-branded category term and find you organically. Neither of those sessions gets traced back to the awareness campaign in any standard attribution setup. They land in the "other" or "organic" bucket, look like free traffic, and the paid campaigns that actually drove them get no credit.

Retail and Amazon halo effects

For brands that sell both direct-to-consumer and through Amazon or other retail platforms, the spillover problem gets even bigger. A Meta video campaign that drives awareness can generate a meaningful lift in Amazon sales from shoppers who discovered the brand through paid social but purchased through the marketplace. Those Amazon conversions have no visible connection to the awareness campaign in any platform's attribution reporting, they just look like organic Amazon revenue.

Why standard models undercount upper-funnel impact

It's not that you're not paying attention. Most attribution tools aren't built to capture the downstream impact of awareness campaigns. Click-based attribution, MTA, and even GA4's data-driven model all share the same core constraint: they assign credit based on observable touchpoints in a trackable user path. If the connection between a channel and its downstream effect isn't a direct, traceable click, it doesn't register.

Upper-funnel channels like connected TV, YouTube, linear TV, podcasts, and even top-of-funnel Meta or Pinterest are primarily designed to build awareness and mental availability. Their most important effects play out across the entire customer journey, not in a single session. No amount of UTM parameter refinement or identity resolution can fully close that gap, because the link between exposure and conversion often crosses days, devices, and platforms.

Multi-touch attribution tries to solve this by stitching together user-level data across touchpoints, building a more complete picture of the customer journey from first exposure to conversion. But multi-touch attribution's accuracy has been eroding steadily as privacy changes across iOS, Chrome, and other platforms have made cross-device and cross-session tracking harder. The data volume that good multi-touch attribution requires to work is increasingly difficult to collect in a privacy-first environment. And even when the data is there, multi-touch attribution still struggles to credit channels that influence consumer behavior without generating a direct click, which is exactly what most upper-funnel channels do.

Most marketing performance data is reported at the channel level: Meta, Google, TikTok, YouTube. But within any given channel, there can be enormous variation between campaigns. Daily model updates mean the data you're acting on reflects what's actually happening in your campaigns right now, rather than a three-week-old snapshot that may no longer be accurate.

The role of MMM in cross-channel attribution

Marketing mix modeling has been around for decades, and the core concept hasn't changed: use statistical modeling to understand the relationship between marketing spend and business outcomes across multiple channels simultaneously. What has changed is the sophistication of the models themselves, and how quickly they can be updated.

Older MMMs were built on regression-based approaches that assumed each channel's effect on revenue was largely independent of what other channels were doing.
